Journey
Carike Keuzenkamp is a legendary South African Afrikaans singer, actress, and children’s entertainer whose career spans more than five decades. Born Elizabeth Maria Magdalena van Zyl on 3 March 1947 in The Hague, Netherlands, she moved to South Africa at a young age, where she would go on to become one of the most recognisable voices in Afrikaans popular and children’s music.
Her breakthrough came in the late 1960s while still a student at the University of Pretoria, when she appeared in the Jamie Uys film 'The Professor and the Beauty Queen' (1967). In the film, she performed the song “Timothy,” which became a major hit and introduced her to national audiences. From that moment, her recording career took shape, and she quickly became a fixture in South African pop and Afrikaans music.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she released a steady stream of albums that established her as one of the most consistent voices in Afrikaans music. Her catalogue includes well-known recordings such as "Byeboerwa" (1979) and "Ek Sing" (1987), alongside numerous charting singles and television appearances. Her music ranged from pop and schlager-style Afrikaans songs to Christian and inspirational material.
A defining part of her career is her work in children’s entertainment. From the mid-1970s onward, she became a household name for children’s music in South Africa, releasing multiple albums that molded early childhood music education and entertainment. She also hosted and contributed to children’s television programming, further expanding her influence beyond music recordings.
Carike’s versatility extended into acting, with appearances in films and stage-related projects, reinforcing her image as a multi-platform entertainer. She also recorded across Afrikaans, English, and other languages, reflecting a broad musical adaptability.
Over time, she became regarded as one of the most enduring figures in South African popular culture. Her work earned her long-term recognition, including a South African Music Award for lifetime contribution to the industry in 2010.
Carike Keuzenkamp is a pioneering Afrikaans music and children’s entertainment figure whose career combines pop success, cultural impact, television presence, and decades of consistent recording, making her one of South Africa’s most established and long-standing female artists.
